Best of 2017: Miguel Bosch

As the 2017 season has come to an end, it’s time to look back at our best work of the year. We start off with yours truly, Miguel Bosch, who besides writing some words, also continues to make desperate attempts at photography.

These photos are my favourites of 2017.

This shot was taken from behind the fence, from a public area. Making use of the shadows cast by the Zolder trees and the band of light illuminating only the track itself, the super long shutter speed leaves just the car in a gloomy photo.

Just like the year before I went for a walk along the old banking at Monza. This place is to motorsport history what Luxor is to ancient Egypt. Artifacts of the old days lay scattered all over the park. Some, like the banking and its crumbling marshal posts, are easy to recognise, while others take a bit more effort to identify.

The most interesting pictures during a race weekend aren’t always made when the cars are on track—quite the contrary. It’s the people who create the racing, and that’s where the real stories are at. This photo, taken on Saturday afternoon before pre-qualifying, shows Andrea Caldarelli sitting in his car, just fiddling around with the steering and seating position. Some final checks before going out on qualifying. Calm and collected.

Race cars in black and white often don’t work for me. Usually there’s too much going on for the shades of grey to set the subject apart. This photo, however, works just fine. There’s nothing but a battered AMG sitting in a flowerbed. It was taken during Friday practice at Monza and wouldn’t be the last time that weekend we saw a wreckage stranded behind the barrier.

The lining-up of the car, the low angle, the elements of the garage door, the line separating the pits from the fast lane, the Kaspersky livery—it’s all about the horizontal lines here. And besides, that white-green Ferrari is a real looker.
