It’s been a busy year for me covering several UK championships plus picking up any international series that pay a visit to our shores. It wasn’t easy to choose my favourite 25 pictures from the year, but I’ve finally settled on these. I’ll probably change my mind shortly, but in the meantime I hope everyone enjoys the ones I’ve settled on for the moment.

This is the first corner at Rockingham but to get this shot you have to be there at the end of the race. Two hours of GT cars shredding their tyres through the fast, banked curve creates a striking image which works well as either a head on or rear shot.

I’ve always loved this view down the Craner Curves and by opening the aperture as wide as possible you can really separate the subject from the background.

Pit stops are always frantic and it can be hard to capture the activity in a still photo. A low shutter speed helps to convey some of that action whilst shooting from inside the garage gives a different perspective. Shooting low down also helps the perspective plus makes it easier to steady the camera so the only blur is the movement of the mechanics.

It’s about the light, stupid. It really is and a photographer should always be looking for any chink of light that’ll illuminate their subject, even the smallest shaft of sunlight can take a picture from mundane to extraordinary. I wouldn’t claim this to be extraordinary, but it’s a great example of exposing for the light plus it was shot from a public grandstand which often offer wonderful but overlooked views.

This is a strange picture because there really isn’t much going on apart from a mechanic preparing himself for the arrival of his car, but something about it conveys that anticipation of getting the job done. With the aperture wide open the focus is purely on the mechanic who in turn is focussed on ensuring his equipment is fully working.
