In the fifth year of GT REPORT the Nürburgring again was my home for most of the season. In fact, the only other racing I photographed this year was Blancpain GT, for which I happily went on a road trip to Monza and Barcelona. But even as repetitive the Nürburgring can sometimes get when you’re there almost every weekend, I still found some new angles and old ones to perfect. Here are my 25 favourite photos of the year.

This edit was born out of necessity. Having run out of SD card space and not wanting to risk missing this shot while changing cards, I decided to keep shooting on the flash card that saves the photos directly in JPEG format. And as anyone who has ever tried to edit a JPEG file knows, you’re stuck with your white balance. In this case, that white balance wasn’t great, so black and white it had to be. I think it turned out quite well as it puts the focus more on Buhk and his moment alone with his thoughts after winning the race.

Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is one of my favourite race tracks. This year was my second visit and I was happy to be back after missing the 2018 race. After arriving in my hotel on Thursday afternoon I dropped off my bags and went to the track to get a first glimpse of all the contenders. The sun had just set when I took this shot of the Lexus being pushed into the garage, with in the back a glowing sky over dark Catalan mountains. This is Catalunya at its most romantic.

Getting a car sharp in Lesmo 1 at f-stop 1.4 is one hell of a challenge, especially when it’s raining and dark. I couldn’t see the cars coming and they go around that corner so fast they’re gone before you know they’re there. Even at 1/1250 the then-leading Rowe Racing Porsche isn’t precisely in focus — but in focus enough to make for a super cool photo. I’ll try again in April and get it perfect.

This is my absolute favourite photo of the year. The colours, the blown out background, confetti flying through the air, celebrating crew and of course the orange FFF Racing Lamborghini, it all came together to tell the story of the 2019 Blancpain GT season finale in one photo. I took this shot with my Sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens which I’ve grown to love using the full frame Canon EOS 5D Mk. IV camera. The sharpness and depth of field is quite stunning and at 50mm it gives a natural perspective while still wide enough to capture a lot of scenery.
