Shane van Gisbergen has been ruled out of next weekend’s Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia Powered by AWS opening round at Phillip Island after injuring his collarbone during a mountain biking accident. He will be replaced by Jamie Whincup.

The Australian champion was slated to start the 2021 GTWC Australia season with the #888 Triple Eight Race Engineering Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo at Phillip Island until his accident on Saturday morning. A statement released by his team said that while medically fit to compete next weekend, the decision has been made to wait until the Supercars Championship’s Sandown SuperSprint in two weeks to return to the wheel to allow more time for a smooth recovery.

Seven-time Supercars champion and 2017 Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour winner Jamie Whincup will take over from Van Gisbergen to race the #888 machine alongside Jefri Ibrahim.

The opening round of the season will take place at Phillip Island on 12-14 March.
