GT4 polesitter Sennan Fielding said he didn’t know he’d secured pole for the Intelligent Money British GT Championship’s Silverstone 500 until he got out of the car.

The Steller Motorsport driver dominated the Pro section of qualifying at Silverstone to power the Steller Motorsport Audi R8 LMS to pole position by more than eight-tenths over Toyota Gazoo Racing UK’s Scott McKenna and John Ferguson.

After Richard Williams was just pipped to the top spot in the first part of qualifying, Fielding blitzed the field – continuing a strong run of form that had started in Saturday morning’s two Free Practice sessions.

Fielding said: “I wasn’t 100% sure on where we were position-wise with everyone else. The team radio was a little bit crackly so I was going round and the lap felt really good and I was just praying it was up there! I was like ‘are we on pole, or are we not?’ It wasn’t until I got out the car and someone came over and congratulated me that I knew. I didn’t have the pressure of someone else there, because I wasn’t sure what was going on.

“So yeah, it was great fun, we can only do the best we can do with what we’ve got. I feel like the team has done a mega job and Richard has done a phenomenal job so I’m chuffed with that.”

The strength of his and Williams’ drive was boosted by the pair’s experience of the Northamptonshire circuit, as Steller’s headquarters isn’t too far from Silverstone. Indeed, having more of the team’s staff at the track was also an added incentive for Fielding.

“It’s the team’s home circuit, they’re based just down the road from here and it’s nice to have all the support from everyone at the team coming here,” he added.

“This track really suits the car – it’s been really consistent and the boys have been spot on. With it being our home circuit, this is probably the place we have done the most testing so we’re confident here and we’ve got the car dialled in.

“Obviously, you can see with the times how close GT4 is, it’s nice to see a field that close – just over a tenth between the top three is really nice to see.”
