Maxi Götz in the Team HRT Mercedes-AMG set the early pace, holding the top spot for much of the session. At the end the whole field was covered by little more than 1.2 seconds so every extra 10th gained was enough to claw a driver up the field. It took until the last 5 minutes for Götz to be knocked from the top spot.
Luca Stolz was the first to get close to the German posting an identical time in his Team Toksport WRT Mercedes-AMG which gave him P2 due to Götz posting his time earlier in the session. By the end the pair were down to 5th and 6th as the other runners got up to speed in the wet conditions.
Dani Juncadella driving the #8 Team GruppeM Racing Mercedes-AMG was the first to knock Götz off the top with a 1.16.958 lap. Albon jumped to second a few moments later before grabbing P1 on his next lap just 0.185 ahead of the Spaniard.
Marco Wittmann took P3 at the death putting his Walkenhorst BMW M6 GT3 ahead of Michael Ammermüller in the SSR performance Porsche.
Championship leader Kelvin van der Linde had a tough session seemingly getting pushed around by the other contenders and even getting turned around by Liam Lawson diving up the inside of him at turn 4. At the end the South African claimed seventh place in the Team Abt Sportline Audi.
Race 2 starts at 12:30 CET.
