With all the cars carrying 5kg of ballast it was decided to add an extra 25kg to Audi and Lamborghini whilst 5kgs was removed from the Ferrari and BMW. The result still saw an Audi take pole position but second and third went to Ferrari and BMW.

At the halfway mark the #74 AF Corse Ferrari of Felipe Fraga was on pole with yesterday’s pole man and race winner, René Rast, taking second place in the #33 Team ABT Audi. Marco Wittmann claimed P3 in the #11 Walkenhorst BMW.

It looked settled at this point but some of the late starters changed things around. Lucas Auer driving the #22 Mercedes-AMG Team Winward Mercedes took P1 and was quickly followed by Kelvin van der Linde who looked like he would be stealing the top spot. In the end the #3 ABT Sportsline Audi lost time in the final sector which cost Van der Linde the top spot. With life still in his tyres and much of the field now in the pits he went for another shot but again fell short.

In the second stint no single driver was able to dominate and the top spot was changing hands on every lap. With 2 minutes 30 remaining Ricardo Feller driving the #7 ABT Sportsline Audi went to the top before being quickly deposed by Clemens Schmid in the #85 GTR grasser-racing.com Lamborghini. Rast pushed Feller down to third but with less than a minute remaining Feller took pole with a lap of 1:39.81 just 1/3000ths faster than Rast’s pole lap from yesterday.

Felipe Fraga claimed P2 in the #74 Red Bull AF Corse Ferrari just 0.15 seconds back and Marco Wittmann claimed P3 in the #11 Walkenhorst Motorsport BMW.

Having dominated all of yesterday, Rast found the extra BOP ballast added to the existing 25kg of success ballast following yesterday’s win saw him finish the session in P8.

Championship leader Sheldon van der Linde found himself struggling yet again and could only post a time that put him in P11.

Race 2 of the DTM at Imola takes place at 13:30 CET.
