Best of 2022: Miguel Bosch

As the world returned mostly back to normal, it wasn’t as much a fully-packed summer as it was in the last two years with races taking place from March to November. However, I didn’t get to visit as many race tracks as I would have liked, sticking mainly to the Nürburgring and only once visiting Spa and Zandvoort. Regardless, I managed to put together my 25 favourite photos of the year. Let’s go back to Monza and Barcelona next year!

There is nothing particularly spectacular about this photo from the Spa 24 Hours pole shoot-out – I just really love how the colours fit together and the simple scene. If you look closely, though, you’ll find some nice details such Andrea Caldarelli looking over to his left probably checking his mirrors while on the fastest lap of the weekend so far, or the waves of hot air being guided over and around the Lamborghini revealing the aerodynamic ingenuity of GT3 racing.

Races late in the season always create the most beautiful images and NLS7 was no exception. The early October date meant trees were already starting to turn into their beautiful autumn colours. I got lucky with the light here at Hohe Acht as the sun only just managed to peek through the clouds before setting. It makes for a great phone wallpaper.

This is a composition photo of three photos. The first was to capture the lights at the campsite and light trails of cars passing by. The second shot is where I shot the car (with flash), while the third was to for the correct exposure of the sky to include some stars and the last remaining twilight. Because I was using a tripod creating the photo was as simple as combining them into one and erasing the parts of the photos that I didn’t need to create a complete, dynamic photo that screams “24 Hours of the Nürburgring”.

The NLS is a dichotomy: there are the highly professional and well-funded GT3 teams, often with manufacturer support, racing amongst a field that includes weekend warriors in their production car-based race cars and everything in between. This photo, taken in parc fermé, encapsulates that perfectly. Standing around the Dinamic Motorsport Porsche 991.2 GT3R are the #1 BMW production car of the successful Adrenalin Motorsport and the Opel Astra OPC of Jung Motorsport.

Here is one that I didn’t expect to take. I was taking panning shots of cars driving through Aremberg with the sun in the back when suddenly this Volkswagen TCR came spearing off backwards into the gravel trap. Quickly changing settings – and only guessing what could work as the back light made a correct exposure tricky – I caught this shot of the car returning to the track. The clouds and bright sunbeams shining through the trees make up for the underexposed foreground. You just need a little bit of luck sometimes.
