In what has become a common theme to start the 2025 season, Porsche Penske Motorsport scored another 1-2 finish on Saturday afternoon, continuing their perfect run at Long Beach.

After an early caution triggered by an incident involving Orey Fidani in the No. 13 AWA Corvette, strategy shifted in the GTP class, with teams opting to make their scheduled pit stops under yellow.

BMW showed early strength, but the pit cycle allowed Porsche Penske Motorsport and Felipe Nasr, in the No. 7 963, to leap into the lead as they exited pit lane—a position the Brazilian would never relinquish.

The victory didn’t come without an early scare, as a “hold your breath” moment in Turn 1 involved Porsche Penske teammates Nick Tandy and Mathieu Jaminet. Fortunately, Jaminet found a gap and navigated through the opening corner safely.

For Porsche Penske, it marks the first time since 2017 that a team has opened the top-class season with three consecutive wins. That year, Wayne Taylor Racing started with five straight victories in the No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac.

Laurens Vanthoor—no stranger to the Porsche Penske camp—also continued his winning form, teaming with Jonny Edgar in the one-off No. 177 “Rexy” Porsche in GTD. The duo took over the lead following their pit stop cycle and never looked back.

Both Vanthoor and Edgar entered the weekend as early favorites, and their pace delivered on expectations.

Vasser Sullivan mirrored Porsche Penske’s dominance in GTD, finishing second and third behind the No. 177 Porsche. Parker Thompson led the way, securing pole on Friday and holding the lead until the team’s scheduled stop at the one-hour mark.

Outside the podium, perhaps the biggest storyline of the weekend was Robert Wickens’ return to top-level competition. Wickens, who topped Friday practice alongside co-driver Tommy Milner, ran solidly just outside the top five and looked poised to challenge for a podium spot.

With more races on the horizon, expectations are high for the Wickens-DXDT pairing to find success in some form this season, based on their strong debut outing.

Coming out of Long Beach, Porsche Penske leads the GTP standings 1-2, while the defending GTD champions—the No. 57 Mercedes-AMG from Winward Racing—still hold a 91-point lead over the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus squad.

The series will return to action in less than a month, May 9 through May 11 at Laguna Seca, where four IMSA-sanctioned series will hit the track.
