Porsche Penske continued their perfect 2025 campaign in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship this weekend, with a strong win for the #6 963 of Mathieu Jaminet and Matt Campbell — the entry’s first victory of the season.

While the #6 car has finished on the podium in all three races so far in 2025, a win had eluded them, as the team’s sister car — the #7 of Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy — had swept the top spot in every race until now.

However, this weekend not only extended Porsche Penske’s overall winning streak, but also marked a perfect fourth consecutive podium weekend for the program across both entries — even if the result came with some late-race controversy.

Beyond GTP, AO Racing picked up their second win during IMSA’s California stretch, with the #77 Roxy Porsche taking the victory in the GTD Pro class. AO Racing’s previous win came at Long Beach; however, that was with “Rexy” in a one-off GTD class entry — a return to their former category.

In GTD, it was all Winward Racing, as the Mercedes-AMG squad secured its second race win of the season, building a solid gap in the championship standings for the class.

Overall, it was a strategy-driven race, with no cautions throughout the 2-hour and 40-minute event — the first time since 2019 that Laguna Seca has run caution-free. It sets the stage for an intriguing showdown on the streets of Detroit.

A Rivalry Brewing?

While the #6 Porsche controlled the race following pit stops, Nick Tandy found himself in a heated on-track battle with Dries Vanthoor, culminating in an aggressive move involving the #7 Porsche and the #24 BMW.

After earlier contact with the #9 Pfaff Lamborghini, Tandy made a move that bumped Vanthoor off-track — ultimately ending BMW’s hopes of a second-straight podium.

The incident was a complicated one, given the tight spacing between Mapelli’s Lamborghini and Vanthoor’s BMW. Still, it adds a layer of drama heading into Detroit.

No team has been able to dethrone Porsche in race conditions this season, and BMW has arguably come the closest to doing so.

An incident like this — even if unintentional — adds fuel to what could become a chaotic and emotionally charged race for Vanthoor and the BMW camp.

As we look toward Detroit, it will be fascinating to see how BMW and Vanthoor approach the #7 Porsche if they find themselves in another head-to-head battle on track.
