The third event of the 2025 GT Cup season took place at Snetterton with mixed conditions throwing an additional curveball in what was another extremely competitive outing.

Race 1

With dark clouds littering the skies above Snetterton, it was only a matter of time before the showers arrived. And arrive they did, just as the cars were on their formation lap. This meant quick decisions had to be made as half the field dived into the pits to fit wet weather tyres whilst the rest gambled on slicks in the hope it was just a passing shower.

As the race got underway, Fraser Fenwick led his Topcats Racing teammate, Jarrod Waberski, through the tricky first lap. Fenwick running wide at Wilson allowed Waberski through as they both fought for traction on the increasingly greasy surface. Both drivers in their Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeos had opted to remain on slicks, and with grip seemingly at a premium, the wet-shod cars soon started to eat into their early advantage.

The leader of these wet-shod cars was none other than Mark Smith in the Paddock Motorsport McLaren 720S. It appeared to be the right decision as he quickly ate up the gap to the leading pair and at the halfway stage, took the lead for what looked set to be yet another overall victory for the American.

However, the UK weather wouldn’t make things so easy. The rain had stopped by now, and the track rapidly dried out, gifting the advantage back to Waberski and Fenwick. Even though Smith had pulled out a margin over the duo, he was quickly reeled in as his wets deteriorated on the drying surface.

It wasn’t long before he was under attack, and as quickly as he had caught and passed the Raging Bulls, they had given him a taste of his own medicine and powered off into the distance with Waberski still leading Fenwick.

It looked as if this would be the finishing result; however, Fenwick had other ideas and powered his way through down the Senna Straight and took another GTC group victory and an outright victory with a one-two for Topcats.

Smith was still struggling on his wets, and fellow GT3 runner, Peter Erceg was quickly catching on his slicks. With his first GT3 win in his sights, Erceg snatched the group lead in the closing stages and came home third overall for his first GT3 group victory. Smith followed him home just 4-seconds behind.

Rather incredibly, fifth overall went the way of the GTH group winner in Simon Griffiths. He also made the bold call to remain on slicks and inherited huge chunks of track position. Despite this only being his second weekend in the Innovation Racing Ginetta G56 GT4, he kept his cool and took another group victory with his nearest rival seven places further back. This being Owen Hizzey in the SVG Ginetta with championship leader, Archie Clark, rounding out the top three in the Feathers Motorsport Aston Martin.

Ian Astley also followed suit and claimed a comprehensive victory in GTA for SVG Motorsport.

Race 2

With the earlier rain having passed but thunderstorms forecast, it was anyone’s guess as to what would happen in the weekend’s first endurance race. Fortunately, this time, the rain held off, and the only option was a fresh set of slicks.

Iain Campbell led the field to the green this time around with Mark Havers alongside him in the Topcats one-two. However, it was Peter Erceg who got the jump at the start and would take the lead by the end of the first lap. From then on, he set about building an advantage whilst his closest rival, Mark Smith, fought his way through the field from his lowly 10th starting position.

It was long before he was all over the back of Erceg’s Audi and finally made his move into the daunting Brundle / Nelson esses before scampering off into the distance to claim another outright victory for his 2025 campaign.

Erceg driving solo for Saturday’s endurance race couldn’t quite match the pace of Smith and secured second in GT3, whilst Darren Kell rounded out the top three overall and in GT3.

GTC saw a dominant display by the Topcats pairing of Campbell and Fenwick as they built up enough of an advantage in the early stages to fend off a late race charge by Will Tregurtha in the TripleM Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo. Tregurtha, who was sharing with fan favourite, Grahame Tilley, lapped up to 2-seconds quicker than Fenwick, but the gap was too much to close with the time remaining. Another podium for the team is a welcome result.

Having moved from GTB to GTC for Snetterton, James and Bill Caley rounded out the top three after an excellent performance in their Uber GT Porsche 991.2 Cup car.

GTH continued the theme of dominant performances as Simon Griffiths swept Saturday’s running. Archie Clark managed to overhaul the Ginetta driver in the opening stint, but a longer pitstop time and a further penalty cost Clark dearly as he and co-driver Tom Canning dropped down the order.

Griffiths ultimately came home a lap clear of SVG’s Marc Elman and Owen Hizzey, whilst Clark and Canning rounded out the top three.

Just ahead of Canning on the road was the Anthony Seddon Racing Ginetta G55 Supercup of Lewis Tindall and Mack Priestwood, who secured another victory in GTA. Neil Wallace and Ian Astley finished second, whilst Brent Millage picked up another podium in group GTA.

Richard Chamberlain made his first appearance of the 2025 season in his monstrous Porsche 935 and was looking good for a second victory of the day before a mechanical issue forced him out of the race and the weekend entirely. Paul Bailey and David Brabham picked up the pieces and claimed GTO victory in their brand-new Ferrari 296 Challenge.

Race 3

Sunday’s first race was a calmer affair after the excitement of Saturday. Smith once again led the field to the start and held that advantage through to the chequered flag in another dominant display.

Behind it was an early squabble between Erceg and Kell, with the former coming out on top and holding his advantage until the pit window. Extra success penalties for Erceg dropped him behind Kell, but in a surprise move, Marcus Clutton emerged in the Audi. This meant bad news for his rivals as Clutton was immediately on the pace and soon overhauled Kell to reclaim second position. Smith, however, was too far up the road as he claimed his second victory of the weekend.

As with Saturday’s running, GTC went the way of Topcats Iain Campbell and Fraser Fenwick, who dominated proceedings. The Tilley and Tregurtha pairing clinched second whilst the Caleys rounded out the top three in their Porsche.

GTH this weekend was a happy hunting ground for Ginetta. This time, SVG came up trumps with Marc Elman and Owen Hizzey keeping out of trouble. Oselli Motorsport gave them a run for their money with Sam Maher-Loughnann just 1-second behind. Championship leaders Clark and Canning had a great opening stint, but a short pitstop meant an extra trip through the pits, costing them any chance of victory. A strong recovery drive from Canning at least secured them a podium in a difficult race.

SVG secured the double as Wallace and Astley brought their BMW home first, just 1.5-seconds clear of the Tindall and Preistwood Ginetta, with Millage rounding out the top three in GTA.

Race 4

In what had been a calm weekend without any safety car interruptions, Race 4 would change all that right at the first corner.

Bill Caley lined up sixth on the grid and made a good start, but it all went wrong exiting Riches. A full 360-degree spin did not harm the Porsche, but caused carnage behind it.

Paul Bailey was running right behind the Porsche and checked up to avoid hitting Caley, but in turn was rear-ended by Tilley and speared off the track. Bailey’s Ferrari was out on the spot with rear suspension damage, whilst Tilley limped back to the pits for some quick repairs before emerging in his battle-scarred Lamborghini. With Bailey’s Ferrari stranded at the side of the track, the safety car was deployed for the first time, but the drama didn’t end there.

Jack Gadd’s left rear wheel parted company with his Huracan Super Trofeo, prolonging the interruption. Racing did get back underway with 8-minutes on the clock with Smith still leading the way.

Kell initially pressured the American, but Smith soon got into his rythym and secured a third victory of the weekend. Kell took second, having fought off a late race attack from Erceg, who rounded out the top three.

GTC once again was won by Campbell, who swept the weekend with teammate Fenwick, but only just as Caley recovered brilliantly to finish within half a second of the Topcats Lamborghini.

Archie Clark got his redemption from a disappointing Race 3 with victory in GTH over Griffiths, with Oselli picking up another podium in their new Aston Martin.

GTA saw another close finish with Neil Wallace just fending off Brent Millage by 0.5-seceonds.

After four thrilling races at Snetterton, Mark Smith now leads the overall championship standings by just 6 points from the Campbell/Fenwick pairing, with Wallace/Astley 22 points adrift in third.
