In what is scheduled to be the final season of competition for the BMW and RLL partnership, the #24 entry of Dries Vanthoor and Philipp Eng captured the team’s first overall and GTP victory of 2025 at Road America.
BMW came on strong late in the race after early pace was set by Acura and, briefly, Porsche. The weekend concluded with a 1-2 finish for the program—potentially the final one for the team in its current form.
After several strong qualifying efforts earlier in the season, Sunday’s result marked a breakthrough for the Team RLL BMW program, delivering an exciting highlight in what could be the team’s swan song season with the German manufacturer.
Beyond GTP, Paul Miller Racing added to BMW’s strong weekend with a class win of their own. The #1 entry of Madison Snow and Neil Verhagen earned their first victory of the season in a race that showcased the strength of BMW’s GT lineup.
In LMP2, AO Racing not only secured a dominant win from pole position but also took over the championship lead, following a disappointing opening lap for United Autosport that ultimately ended their day.
In GTD, Triarsi Competizione—having recently streamlined their operations—earned the team’s first class victory with the #021 Ferrari, adding another triumph to Ferrari’s strong 2025 campaign.
Showing Out
There were several standout performances this weekend that set the stage for an exciting final three races of the season.
Heart of Racing’s brand-new Valkyrie continues to turn heads, and this weekend’s sixth-place finish added momentum to the team’s rapid rise. The youthful lineup of Roman De Angelis and Ross Gunn has proven to be a strong pairing in their first year. With consistent pace and minimal setbacks so far, there’s significant potential for this Aston Martin-backed program to deliver something special in the near future.
DXDT Racing also delivered a strong showing with Robert Wickens behind the wheel, contending for a class win until the final minutes of the race. Wickens has found solid success in his first full sprint season in the top series, continuing to showcase his skill and resilience.
Team Tonis made a splash in their debut race, qualifying fourth and contending for a podium before a late mishap halted their run. It’s unclear how many more events the team will compete in this season, but it was a promising start for the new LMP2 outfit.
The Race to Road Atlanta
With Road America in the rearview mirror, just three races remain on the IMSA calendar—two of which will feature full four-class fields. VIR stands alone as the final GT-only race, hosting GTD Pro and GTD entries exclusively.
Although it wasn’t the ideal weekend for Porsche Penske Motorsport, the team’s early-season success has kept them in a strong position heading toward the finale at Road Atlanta. While Team RLL BMW made a big leap—now just over 100 points behind the #6 Penske 963—it remains a steep climb for any GTP challenger to catch the championship leader.
As mentioned, AO Racing took over the LMP2 points lead after their victory, aiming to add another class title to their growing collection.
In the GTD classes, Winward Racing continues to hold the top spot as they pursue back-to-back championships, while the #3 Corvette Racing entry narrowly leads over DragonSpeed in GTD Pro.
