The morning mist had barely lifted when the DTM grid thundered onto the Red Bull Ring for today’s qualifying session. And it was Thierry Vermeulen from Emil Frey Racing, who laid down the law with a lap time of 1:28.301.

Swiss ace Ricardo Feller wasn’t far behind in his Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo2, just 0.157 seconds adrift.

Jack Aitken, fresh off a Saturday shunt, bounced back in style. The Brit showed true grit in his Emil Frey Ferrari, securing third and reminding everyone that you can’t keep a good lad down.

Austrian favourite Lucas Auer put his Mercedes-AMG GT3 on fourth, while compatriot Thomas Preining wrangled his Porsche 911 GT3 R into fifth.

Race 2 gets underway this afternoon at 13:30 local time.
