Scott McLaughlin, along with fellow Penske IndyCar driver Josef Newgarden, is getting laps in this weekend at Daytona, testing the Porsche 963 for the team today and tomorrow.
McLaughlin is no stranger to the 963, having earned seat time back in February at Sebring. However, this weekend marks his first chance to get up to speed with the updated car and tire compound at Daytona.
“Yeah, I mean, I got asked if I felt any difference, and it’s been so long I haven’t,” McLaughlin stated. “But I think it’s cool to just be a part of a program like this. There’s a huge amount of infrastructure and people, and it’s a cool experience. That’s what’s so cool about being a Penske dude — you’re able to get these opportunities here and there, and you just grab it with both hands. Regardless of if it’s my last time or whatever, it’s fun to have a crack.”
Over the past few seasons, McLaughlin has had chances to jump aboard different types of cars. From a Corvette last year to LMP2s with Tower, the IndyCar star has experienced plenty of diversity within IMSA.
“Honestly, I said on the way over here to Josef, I feel like it’s not a huge difference to generally the P2 feel in the car. It’s interesting — this has got a little bit more power. So, I had a good read. Obviously, I’ve driven this thing at Sebring on two completely different tracks, and it was cool to drive it here.”
When asked about the new Michelin tire compound, McLaughlin responded, “Yeah, no, I think the track’s pretty low grip right now. So, I think once the grip comes down, I’ll have more of an idea.”
