In another chaotic race at São Paulo, Season 9 World Champion Jake Dennis delivered a P1 performance in the Formula E season opener after starting from pole.
The opening lap set the tone for the afternoon as both Mahindra drivers, Edoardo Mortara and Nyck de Vries, ran off track in Turns 1 and 2 after contact. The incident ended de Vries’ hopes of securing a podium.
Following the early chaos, the race remained relatively calm until midway, when battles inside the top 10 began to intensify—particularly between Nissan teammates Oliver Rowland and Norman Nato. Unfortunately for Nato, a puncture during the exchange ended his chances of fighting for the win.
On Lap 23, Mortara suffered additional contact that ended his race and triggered the first FCY of the afternoon. After the restart, Mitch Evans brought out another FCY in the closing 10 laps when he hit the wall and stopped on track, prompting a red flag. However, this would not be the most dramatic stoppage of the day.
Cupra Kiro rookie Josep “Pepe” Martí was involved in a frightening, high-speed crash when he went airborne and flipped after approaching slowed cars under FCY conditions. Thankfully, the former F2 prospect was able to walk away from the fiery wreck.
Despite the incidents and multiple interruptions, Jake Dennis remained calm and composed, securing a dominant victory for himself and Andretti. Rounding out the podium were the defending champion, Nissan’s Oliver Rowland, and Citroën’s newest addition, Nick Cassidy. Other notable results included Joel Eriksson finishing seventh in his return to the grid and Zane Maloney earning his first career points with ABT-Lola Yamaha.
“Winning a race generally anytime during the season is always a big boost in confidence, but, I think when you get one at the start of the year, especially not winning a race last season, is a nice way to kickstart the year,” Dennis said. “It gives us a bit of confidence that the off-season work we’ve done is working. Generally, just feeling good. I’d be a bit naive to start looking at that because I won the season opener in Season 9, that I’ve got a good chance now. I think we definitely still need to work hard and do our homework. But, ultimately, I am very happy we got our first win and the team are deserving of that as well.”
As for what’s to come following Dennis is season opening win, the former champion confirmed his sportscar plans for 2026, stating his commitment towards returning to BMW. However, Dennis ultimate focus is to return to the mountain top of Formula E and win a championship with Andretti.
Season 12 of Formula E returns to action on January 10th, as the series heads to North America for the first of two races in the 2026 calendar first month, hitting the track at Mexico City.
