Before the 2026 World Rally Championship season gets underway, we take a look at the final pre-season tests on the familiar mountain roads around Monte-Carlo.
Hidden away near Gap, these narrow and twisting roads are where teams complete their last serious preparations, far from the crowds and cameras. It is a setting that feels unmistakably Monte-Carlo, quiet, remote, and demanding, long before the rally itself begins.
Winter as part of the test
Winter conditions played a major role this year. Snowfall, icy sections in the shade and constantly changing grip meant no two runs felt the same. Drivers moved between frozen asphalt, snow-covered hairpins and dry patches within a single stage, making precision and confidence essential.
These tests are as much about feeling as they are about data, with drivers and engineers working together to understand how the cars react when conditions are at their most unpredictable.
All three manufacturers in action
The gallery features all three WRC manufacturers. Hyundai Motorsport ran Adrien Fourmaux alongside co-driver Alexandre Coria. Toyota Gazoo Racing was represented by Takamoto Katsuta with Aaron Johnston, as well as Sami Pajari and Marko Salminen, both crews tackling icy and snow-lined roads.
M-Sport Ford also took part, with Rally1 newcomer Jon Armstrong and co-driver Shane Byrne beginning their first full season at the top level in challenging conditions.
Extra mileage on Alpine roads
In addition to its Rally1 programme, M-Sport Ford also ran a Ford Fiesta Rally2 during the test. The car completed several runs on the same Alpine roads, adding further mileage in conditions that mirror what Rally Monte-Carlo often delivers.
A quiet start, far from the spotlight, but one that sets the tone for the season ahead.
