Porsche Penske Motorsport led the way early in the Rolex 24 testing weekend, with a pair of factory Porsche 963s and the customer JDC-Miller entry setting the pace in the opening session.
Felipe Nasr posted the fastest lap of Session 1 in the #7 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 with a time of 1:36.327, narrowly edging Nico Pino in the #85 JDC-Miller Porsche 963 at 1:36.331, while Laurens Vanthoor placed third in the #6 Porsche Penske entry with a 1:36.435.
In LMP2, Charles Milesi topped the timing charts in the first on-track practice of the season aboard the #11 TDS Racing Oreca with a best lap of 1:38.935. Spencer Pumpelly led all GTD entries in the #44 Magnus Racing Aston Martin with a 1:47.304, while Dean McDonald set the fastest time in GTD Pro for the newly launched #59 RLL Team McLaren, stopping the clock at 1:47.766.
Session 2 saw Sheldon van der Linde place the #24 BMW M Hybrid V8 on top of the GTP timing sheets with a 1:36.742. Ben Hanley led LMP2 in the #2 United Autosports entry with a 1:39.136, while Corey Lewis paced GTD in the #66 Gradient Racing Ford Mustang with a 1:47.522. Defending Supercars champion Chaz Mostert topped GTD Pro in the #75 Express Racing Mercedes-AMG with a 1:47.625.
In addition to IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship action, the opening day of the Roar Before the 24 also featured two sessions each for the Michelin Pilot Challenge and the VP Racing Fuels SportsCar Challenge.
In Michelin Pilot Challenge GS, CSM’s Morgan Burkhard set the fastest time in Session 1, while Cameron Lawrence led TCR in the #89 HART Honda. Team TGM claimed top honors in Session 2, with Hugh Plumb posting the quickest GS lap in the #64 Mustang GT4, while Rocco Pasquarella paced TCR in the #5 KMW Motorsports entry.
In the VP Racing Fuels SportsCar Challenge, Danny Soufi led Practice 1 in the P3 class for PINAXIS – Zone 4 Racing, with teammate Oscar Tunjo topping the charts in Session 2. Westin Workman was quickest in GSX for Rafa Racing in both practice sessions.
Roar Before the 24 action continues Saturday, January 17, beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET with the Michelin Pilot Challenge’s first session of the day. The schedule is highlighted by the opening round of the VP Racing Fuels SportsCar Challenge, streaming live on Peacock, along with the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s only night session of the weekend, set to begin at 6:30 p.m. ET.
