Mazda MX-5 Cup driver Nathan Nicholson has received the call to compete in three NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races with Freedom Racing Enterprises, beginning in late February on the Streets of St. Petersburg.
Nicholson, who is set to return to Mazda MX-5 Cup competition in 2026 with Advanced Autosport’s, will also contest Truck races at Watkins Glen in May and at the highly anticipated San Diego street course race in June at Naval Base Coronado.
In his Mazda MX-5 Cup career, Nicholson has recorded 6 podium finishes but has yet to score a series win.
Jumping aboard for the three Truck Series races will be Nicholson’s Mazda MX-5 Cup sponsor, Whelen, a brand familiar to NASCAR fans as a staple on stock cars.
St. Petersburg, Nicholson’s first race with FRE, will be quite a busy weekend, as Mazda MX-5 Cup racing will also be on the bill that same weekend.
“I was looking to make the step up to NASCAR at the right time and with the right people, and when the 2026 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series schedule was announced, I knew right away that the street courses presented a great opportunity for me,” Nicholson said in the team’s release. “Spencer (Boyd) and I share a natural connection through our Midwestern roots and karting background, but what truly set this team apart were the values and integrity of the entire organization. I knew Spencer would have my back as I made this move, and I’m honored to drive the No. 76. I am also incredibly grateful to Whelen for their continued support as we begin this next chapter together. The team and I couldn’t be more excited about this opportunity.”
