In the IndyCar Series, veteran driver Graham Rahal has recorded six career wins, 29 podium finishes, and five poles during his tenure.

However, sports car racing remains a relatively untapped area of his career.

Rahal has not competed in a sports car race since 2019, when he raced in the DPi class with the Penske Acura program. His sports car résumé includes just eight total starts, with most of those appearances coming at marquee endurance events such as Daytona and Sebring.

While Rahal’s father, Bobby Rahal, has been heavily involved in the sports car scene—most notably in IMSA—Graham has rarely ventured into the discipline himself.

During the offseason, rumors circulated that Graham Rahal could join Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s new GTD Pro program with McLaren. Although the opportunity ultimately did not come together, the possibility of Rahal driving the entry in the future has not been completely ruled out.

“I was asked to do it, but I’ll be honest with you—when I was going to go do the test it was right around the time my daughter was born,” Rahal told GT REPORT at St. Petersburg. “It was really hard for me to get away. I told my dad, ‘Hey, Juri (Vips) has been here with us. He’s been a pro. He’s been patient. He deserves an opportunity. I’ll get my chance too, but a guy like Juri needs to be driving that thing for sure.’”

As for when that opportunity might arise, a few races could potentially allow Rahal to step into the McLaren.

Long Beach and Detroit could be possibilities given the IMSA and IndyCar crossover weekends. However, the busy schedules and sprint-race formats may make it difficult for Rahal to participate. Road Atlanta could arguably present the best chance, though uncertainty still remains.

With that said, there is hope that Rahal will eventually log laps in his father’s McLaren program.
