After 13 years with BMW, Stefano Comandini has announced a major shift in his career, confirming a move to Ferrari machinery in the GT Cup class of the Italian GT Championship alongside his friend Vito Postiglione.

“Today my sporting life changes… after 13 years with BMW, I’m changing colours,” Comandini said. “It didn’t end the way I expected, but that’s how these stories go sometimes.”

A career that nearly came to an end

The Italian, long associated with BMW and the team of Roberto Ravaglia, revealed he had seriously considered stepping away from racing altogether after three decades in the sport.

“I thought about not racing anymore… after 30 years I could have been satisfied,” he explained. “I also didn’t have the budget to compete in the top category.”

Comandini did have options to remain within the BMW structure, including opportunities in GT4 machinery.

“I could have continued with BMW in GT4, and both Promodrive and Nova Race waited for me, knowing that my priority was GT3.”

Last-minute call changes everything

A late offer from Best Lap ultimately reshaped his plans.

“The Best Lap team called me and offered me the chance to race a Ferrari 296 Challenge in the GT Cup class together with an old friend, Vito Postiglione,” he said. “But I had to decide within the afternoon.”

The pairing adds an interesting dynamic to the grid, as both Comandini and Vito Postiglione are former Italian GT champions.

Despite the appeal, the decision was far from straightforward.

“Leaving a brand that gave me so much satisfaction wasn’t easy… I kept thinking about all the great moments over those 13 years.”

Full-circle moment

In the end, the Roman chose to embrace what he sees as a rare opportunity at this stage of his career.

“An opportunity like this wouldn’t come again at my age, so I decided to accept it with enthusiasm.”

The move also marks a symbolic return to Ferrari machinery, where his GT journey began.

“I’m going back to where I started… maybe it’s a sign of destiny.”

Now preparing for his 31st season in motorsport, Comandini made one thing clear: “It’s not over yet.”
