The St. Pete Grand Prix weekend has long featured sportscar racing alongside IndyCar’s season opener, with series like GT America and the IMSA VP Racing Fuels SportsCar Challenge tackling the tight Florida street circuit.
This year, however, St. Pete adds a new twist: the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will contest the first street race in series history. The unknowns surrounding how the trucks will race on a street course have already built anticipation — and the entry list brings plenty of star power from the sportscar and open-wheel ranks.
Among the headliners is former Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti, returning to NASCAR competition with Tricon Garage. Franchitti also owns sportscar credentials, including an overall victory in the 2008 Rolex 24 at Daytona with Chip Ganassi Racing.
Adam Andretti will join him in the No. 5 for Tricon. While his sportscar résumé isn’t as extensive, Andretti has been competing in Trans Am in recent seasons.
James Hinchcliffe is another notable addition, driving the No. 77 for Spire Motorsports. Hinchcliffe recently competed in this year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona with Pfaff Motorsports in the team’s final run with the Lamborghini Huracán.
Full-time sportscar talent will also be represented. Jackson Lee, son of veteran pit reporter Kevin Lee, will drive for Team Reaume as the Michelin Pilot Challenge Porsche competitor makes his Truck Series debut. Nathan Nicholson will also make the jump, piloting the No. 76 for Freedom Racing Enterprises.
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race in St. Petersburg, Fla. is set to kick-off at Noon ET, on Saturday, February 28th, live on FOX.
