IMSA has officially released its post-race verdict regarding the incident involving No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsports Porsche 963 driver Kevin Estre and No. 31 Whelen Cadillac V-Series.R driver Jack Aitken during Sunday’s Motul SportsCar Endurance Grand Prix at Road America.
The incident between the two GTP class drivers came with fewer than 10 minutes remaining, as Estre and Aitken battled for second place. The battle came to a head when Estre made contact with Aitken, sending both cars into the gravel and tire barrier and ending their chances of victory. The race would ultimately finish under a full-course yellow.
IMSA announced Sunday that it would hold off on releasing the official race results and updated championship standings while the incident was under investigation. Following its review, the sanctioning body has handed Estre and the No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsports crew a post-race penalty equivalent to a five-minute stop-and-hold penalty.
In addition to the race penalty, Estre has been placed on a two-race probation by IMSA, covering the upcoming events at Indianapolis and Road Atlanta. Any further penalties incurred during the probationary period could result in a potential suspension for the Porsche driver.
The updated provisional results now show the No. 31 Whelen Cadillac finishing eighth in Sunday’s race, while the No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsports Porsche 963 has been scored 10th following the investigation.
IMSA is expected to release the official race results next week, while the updated championship standings have yet to be released.
