Logan Sargeant is gearing up for his 2026 season in the World Endurance Championship in Proton Competition’s No. 88 Ford Mustang GT3. However, 2027 is set to be a historic season, as the former Formula 1 driver joins Mike Rockenfeller and Seb Priaulx in one of two Ford Hypercars.
While Sargeant has competed at the highest level of motorsport in Formula 1, joining Ford’s inaugural Hypercar lineup in 2027 carries special significance as an American-born driver.
“It’s definitely nice, that’s for sure,” Sargeant said. “I think being an American and being around Ford cars growing up my entire life—I think my dad’s had a Ford truck since I was born, so we’ve never not had one—it’s really cool to be a part of that, to be in something so familiar to me, and to have the opportunity to win at Le Mans with Ford will be amazing. Especially in the Hypercar class, which is what everyone’s goal is. I’m going to be pushing hard to try and make that a reality, and it’s definitely a huge privilege for me.”
As mentioned, Sargeant’s first stop, however, will be with Proton’s LMGT3 effort this season. Preparation has already been well underway for the program, as he tested the car over the offseason—featuring a brand-new EVO kit.
While a Hypercar and a GT3 car are distinctly different, there are still some benefits from the crossover.
“I think it does depend on the chassis,” Sargeant said. “From what I’ve understood, the Oreca chassis performs more like a prototype, whereas others perform more like a GT-style car. Nonetheless, there’s always something to take from every car you drive. Just building versatility and being able to jump into anything and perform is super beneficial. So yes, there are definitely things I can take from GT3.”
Sargeant added, regarding the performance changes to the Mustang: “It’s difficult for me to say—it was a very wet day from start to finish. But the car performed very well in the wet, which I was pleased with. That gives me some experience heading into the season. I was impressed with the braking and traction. There are still areas to work on, but overall, I was very impressed with the drivability.”
Sargeant’s first outing with Proton Competition will come in two weeks, on April 19, when the series kicks off Round 1 at Imola.
