Corvette Racing’s Alexander Sims will start from pole position for Saturday afternoon’s Chevrolet Detroit Sports Car Classic in the No. 3 Corvette Z06 GT3.R, leading a front-row sweep for Corvette Racing and Chevrolet. Teammate Tommy Milner will line up second in the No. 4 Corvette Z06 GT3.R after the pair locked out the top two spots in GTD Pro qualifying.
Entering qualifying, both the No. 9 Pfaff Motorsports Lamborghini Temerario GT3 and the No. 1 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3 EVO had their fastest laps deleted after each was deemed responsible for separate red flags during practice. Despite the setback, Sandy Mitchell qualified the Pfaff Lamborghini 10th in class, while Neil Verhagen secured sixth on the grid for Paul Miller Racing.
Sims faced a tense moment midway through the session when he nearly sent his Corvette into the Turn 3 tire barrier. However, he was able to gather the car up, avoid contact, and continue on to claim pole position.
Behind the Corvette Racing duo, Ben Barnicoat placed the No. 14 Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3 third on the starting grid. The team’s sister No. 15 Lexus, driven by reigning Supercars champion Chaz Mostert, will roll off seventh in Saturday’s race.
“That was really close, actually,” Sims said. “I almost failed and used the escape route, but intuition, I just thought I could just about make it, and that obviously helps your rhythm to not have to stop, reverse, and thankfully I made it and didn’t. I just explored the track road, and it’s definitely grippier on the inside. To get our Corvette on the front row, locking it out is pretty special. Lines us up nicely for the race tomorrow. Awesome job by the whole team.”
