HWA AG has confirmed the conclusion of its customer racing cooperation with Mercedes-AMG, bringing to an end a 15-year partnership that played a central role in modern GT customer racing. The collaboration began in 2010 and is widely regarded as one of the most successful programmes in the history of GT racing.

Cooperation comes to a close

HWA CEO Martin Marx described the partnership as fundamental to customer motorsport: “This collaboration has not simply accompanied customer motorsport, but has essentially defined it,” he said in a statement. “The trust that Mercedes-AMG has placed in us over many years has been the basis for building a programme of exceptional quality and global reputation. We would like to thank Mercedes-AMG for this time together – in particular for the entrepreneurial freedom to take on responsibility holistically and to further develop the programme in terms of both content and operations.”

Chief Technology Officer Gordian von Schöning added: “It was an incredibly successful era. The partnership with Mercedes-AMG in customer motorsport was characterised by trusting cooperation, challenges and many successes, and set global standards in terms of technical reliability, support and engineering. We were part of a successful project that remains unrivalled to this day, and we are very grateful that our work allowed us to make a significant contribution to it.”

A defining partnership for AMG customer racing

The joint programme produced the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 in 2011 and, from 2016 onwards, the Mercedes-AMG GT3, which became the most successful and best-selling GT3 car to date. Vehicles developed under the partnership have competed in more than 15,000 races worldwide, winning numerous championships across multiple continents.

Beyond GT3, HWA was also involved in the development, construction and support of the Mercedes-AMG GT2, GT4 and GT Track Series programmes, while taking responsibility for engineering, manufacturing, trackside support and the overall structure of AMG’s customer racing operations.

Roots in DTM and long-term collaboration

The relationship between both companies dates back to HWA’s foundation in 1998, when the company became responsible for the development and operation of Mercedes’ DTM cars. By 2018, HWA and Mercedes-AMG had secured eleven drivers’ titles and more than 180 victories in DTM, making HWA the most successful team in the series’ history.

What happens next

The announcement formalises the end of a collaboration whose operational role had already evolved in recent years, as Mercedes-AMG continued to develop and manage its global customer racing activities under its own structure. In parallel, HWA has continued to broaden its activities beyond customer racing, with projects spanning high-level motorsport engineering, vehicle development and road car programmes.
