In honor of the recent passing of IndyCar team owner Dennis Reinbold, Vasser Sullivan will compete under the banner of Vasser Sullivan Championship Racing/Dreyer & Reinbold this weekend at Watkins Glen International, paying tribute to Reinbold’s longtime friendship and partnership with team principals Jimmy Vasser and James Sullivan.
Both of the team’s full-time Lexus entries—the No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3 in GTD and the No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3 in GTD Pro—will carry the tribute designation throughout the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen weekend. The naming change is intended solely as a tribute, with no indication of a broader competitive or operational alliance between the two organizations beyond their longstanding relationship.
The addition of Dreyer & Reinbold to the team name marks the first known appearance of the organization within top-level sports car racing. The Indiana-based team is best known for its presence in IndyCar and as one of the few remaining organizations focused primarily on the Indianapolis 500.
Over 27 seasons of IndyCar competition, Dreyer & Reinbold Racing recorded a single series victory, earned during its inaugural 2000 campaign when Robbie Buhl captured a dramatic win at Walt Disney World Speedway in Orlando, Florida. While victories proved elusive in the years that followed, the team remained a respected competitor, particularly at Indianapolis, where it frequently punched above its weight against larger organizations.
Most recently, Conor Daly emerged as a contender for victory in the 109th Indianapolis 500, placing Dreyer & Reinbold Racing in the spotlight once again before ultimately falling short of the win.
Beyond IndyCar, the organization also established a successful presence in rallycross competition, competing in both Nitro Rallycross and the Americas Rallycross Championship while collecting 32 race victories across the two disciplines.
“Dennis’s passion for racing and commitment to the sport left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him,” the team said in a statement announcing the tribute. “Look forward to going racing with you again, Dennis.”
