Scherer Sport PHX will line up on P3 with the #16 Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II for the ADAC RAVENOL 24h Nürburgring after the Top Qualifying sessions on Friday at the Nordschleife. In conversation with GT REPORT, teamboss Ron Moser talks about the advantage they have: three fantastic drivers that work very well together.

So far the N24 weekend has given the spectators, teams and drivers in the paddock a lot: rain, hail, snow, accidents, yellow flags. To put it shortly, it’s another weekend with a typical Nordschleife flair. Moser sees it as the biggest highlight of the year for him and his team.

“For sure!” he says as we’re seated in the team’s truck in the paddock. “We’re always happy to be here. I think the Audi is a good car in the rain, but also in dry conditions – it’s a stable car always. We’re looking forward to going on track,” Moser adds.

The #16 Audi performed well in the races leading to the Nürburgring 24 Hours, with a highlight of the win in the 24h Nürburgring Qualifiers race with Alexander Sims, Ben Green and Christopher Haase working hard for the victory. For Haase, the car didn’t feel at its best yet in April, so, the team went all in to make sure they have the best set-up for the 24-hour race.

“We made good steps in the set-up work also. We did a lot of work together to improve the car a bit. The other cars are much newer. We have – as I always say – a bit of an old lady!” Moser jokes, referring to the Audi GT3 platform as one of the oldest GT3 platforms on the grid.

“We tried to maximize our package and I think we did that. The drivers work really well together, they are all on the same level, we have good engineers, and I think that’s a really powerful package.”

Praise for the Audi trio

Haase is, of course, very familiar with the platform of the Audi. Moser is proud that Green and Sims were on his level very fast. “I think this is our biggest advantage against the other manufacturers. The drivers are all working in the same direction, they all have the same feeling from the car,” Moser explains.

“We work on the car and make steps. The drivers adapt to it easily, so we don’t lose a lot of driving time. We can do the set-up work with all three of them together, because they work the same way. Alex is two years with us now, he’s very familiar with the team and the car. Ben is a full pro and he works really professionally.”

He points out at the drivers are used to the Corvette car, which he thinks is similar to the Audi. He sees that as an advantage as well. “We have a chance to go for the win for sure. It’s good to see our level of competitiveness against the other manufacturers. We have a package that might be ten years older, but we have a strong car.”

It’s very impressive to see Scherer Sport PHX battle against the big brands like Porsche and Mercedes-AMG. Without factory support from Audi, the team brings the results in. “Audi is still here and we have a lot of guys from the past, for example, the engineers. They’re really important to us,” Moser says.

“Together with the experience we have, we want to show that we can beat the manufacturers.”

Haase confirms amazing team work

After Top Qualifying 3, GT REPORT also managed to catch up with Haase himself, who drove the last session on Friday. He was not entirely satisfied with the rear of the car during the 24h Nürburgring Qualifiers, but confirms that the car felt great during the Friday sessions of the N24.

“I have to thank the team for that. They kept believing in us and they kept working on the stability of the car and the balance. I went out and I was like: how is that possible? The car was so good to drive!” Haase says.

The two-time N24 winner is happy with to be working with Green and Sims on the set-up of the car and echoes Moser’s words: “It’s true. We have such similar feelings about the car. This makes it easier every session, you can work with every driver for the same target and that’s why we ended up here [in the top 3].”
