Tyler Gonzalez experienced two very different races this weekend at Barber Motorsports Park during the Mazda MX-5 Cup’s IndyCar support weekend, where the BSI Racing driver scored a pair of victories to close the gap on series leader Jared Thomas.
On Saturday (Round 5), Gonzalez cruised to victory, leading nearly every lap after an early pass on Nate Cicero under wet conditions.
Sunday’s race told a different story, as Gonzalez had to battle for the lead until the final few minutes, when he made a late-race pass to complete the weekend sweep in Alabama.
The race wins were crucial for Gonzalez’s pursuit of the championship lead. Jared Thomas, the series’ only two-time champion, had a tough start to the weekend with a 15th-place finish on Saturday but rebounded with a 5th-place result on Sunday.
Since Round 4 in St. Petersburg this March, Tyler Gonzalez has claimed three consecutive victories as he continues his charge, with the series set to return to action in June at Mid-Ohio.
