For the first time in nearly six years, IMSA’s Mazda MX-5 Cup heads to Indianapolis Motor Speedway to test the road course configuration ahead of the series’ competition return later this September.
The entry list features 24 drivers for the upcoming two-day test. Teams set to hit the track beginning tomorrow include BSI Racing (8), Advanced Autosport (5), McCumbee McAleer Racing (4), JTR Motorsports Engineering (4), Wheels America Racing (2), and Rock Steady Racing (1).
Among the drivers competing, two arrive without current IMSA licenses. One is Lanie Buice (BSI Racing), who has primarily competed in stock car racing with ARCA and the CARS Tour. Tristan McKee (BSI Racing) also represents a Mazda–NASCAR crossover contingent, recently winning the ARCA East season opener at Hickory Motor Speedway.
Other notables include current championship leader Bobby Gossett (BSI Racing), Justin Adakonis (McCumbee McAleer Racing), Nathan Nicholson (Advanced Autosport), and Jared Thomas (JTR Motorsports Engineering). Of the drivers testing, only Thomas has Mazda MX-5 Cup race experience at the circuit, finishing fifth in the first race of the 2020 weekend (September 4).
The test kicks off tomorrow morning, April 15, with Session 1 from 9:50–10:30 a.m. The day concludes with a pair of afternoon sessions: Session 2 (1:10–1:50 p.m.) and Session 3 (3:45–4:20 p.m.). The series returns for the final day of testing on Thursday, April 16, featuring five sessions: Session 4 (9:00–9:35 a.m.), Session 5 (11:30 a.m.–12:10 p.m.), Session 6 (2:00–2:35 p.m.), Session 7 (3:40–4:15 p.m.), and Session 8 (5:20–6:00 p.m.).
