After several seasons of absence, Max Mugelli has announced his return to the Italian GT Championship. The Tuscan driver, a veteran of the national series and one of the great protagonists during the first editions of the championship, will compete in the Sprint series at the wheel of a Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo from the Best Lap team. Mugelli is set to share the cockpit with Lorenzo Pegoraro, who makes his transition over from the Italian Prototype Championship.
Mugelli was recently spotted testing the Lambo at Monza and although lap times seemed satisfactory, the test was cut short due to an off-track excursion at Ascari.
“I had the opportunity to test the Lambo Huracán of the Best Lap team in Monza a few days ago and I was pleasantly surprised,” said Mugelli.
“From the first laps the feeling was excellent, and the times proved it. I managed a time of over a second faster than last year’s category pole time which was set back in October.
“Unfortunately, I made a mistake in the Ascari corner, spinning and damaging the rear against the protective barriers. I was pushing a lot and I lost control of the rear, which is completely normal on a fast track like Monza, where given the speed if you lose the car it’s easy to crash.
“The data we have obtained from the portion of the tests carried out are however encouraging and give us hope for the first race of the season on the Brianza circuit at the beginning of May.
“I want to thank the Best Lap team and Maurizio Pitorri who gave me the opportunity to return to Italian GT. I am sure that we will be contenders in our category because the Lamborghini Huracán is competitive and I will have a fast driver like Lorenzo on my side. After a truly uncertain 2020 due to the outbreak of COVID, 2021 will be a year full of new challenges and I hope for success too!”
