IMSA announced Thursday the next generation of LMP2 cars will arrive in the WeatherTech Sportscar Championship for the 2029 season.
The decision comes as the series wants to give “competitors plenty of runway to plan for the future,” according to President John Doonan. Doonan further states this timeline gives “clear direction for current and prospective teams” and opportunity to “plan for the investment into the new cars.”
The new generation of LMP2 will consist of only two chassis manufacturers, ORECA and Ligier. This is down from four suppliers during the previous regulations. Gibson will once again serve as the engine supplier. However, the engines will morph from 4.2-litre V8s to 3.4-litre, twin-turbocharged V6s. Gibson will partner with Nissan to design and manufacture the new engine.
While IMSA will delay implementing the next-gen LMP2 cars, the ACO says the platform is on target for debut in the 2028 season. The new cars will feature in the European and Asian Le Mans Series, along with the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
